@dr. martinelli:

Boy Genius has a following of "millions of blackberry users"??? Sorry, Doctor, but he doesn't have nearly that many readers. Quantcast puts traffic for boygeniusreport.com at 26,623 US uniques, while Compete gives them 125k. That's hardly "millions of blackberry users".

Also, there is a huge difference between a "rumor blog" like Boy Genius and an esteemed print (and no online) publication like Fortune. BG can post whatever he want, when he wants to, with no responsibility to fact-check or be right. Fortune and other major publications, on the other hand, have a comprehensive system of fact checking, as they are accountable to actual stakeholders. Pubs like Fortune, et al., check facts, confirm sources, and make getting right a priority. Boy Genius posts whatever he hears and has no obligation to fact-check and confirm multiple sources. I would venture a guess that Fortune's source is totally different than that of Boy Genius Report's. As such, a confirmed source, Fortune has ZERO obligation to cite the other "rumor blog".

Cheers,
MEE

Danny, a decision by AT&T to make changes to it's normal business dealings to accomodate Apple probably isn't the worst idea. As we know, millions of people Globally have said the reason that they have not bought an iPhone is because they are waiting for a 3G version. My prediction is that all of the people that have been waiting, will now buy one. Globally. And AT&T knows that. A 3G iPhone has a HUGE revenue advantage Globally over 3G Blackberry. (for the record, I like Blackberry and iPhone, and I hope that both of them success in the future)

The writer of this blog and/or CNN and Fortune need to go ahead and just update this blog and make sure they made a mistake. The BlackBerry Community is a tight-knit one and will be tearing this up until done so...trust me.

And to prove even more that Scott didn't do his homework:

ScreenShot of 9000 (not 8900) "About" page:

ScreenShot of the 9000 (not the 8900 with the flat keys, chrome ring, etc) next to the 8800 and 8300:

1. Mr. Moritz, you need to do a little more research on these claims. Posts like this make not only yourself look ignorant, but also Fortune and CNN. The 9000 series BlackBerry devices are not touchscreen. Don't expect a touchscreen BlackBerry for atleast a year. The "silver metal edge, curved corners and flatter QWERTY keyboard" that you make reference to is the 9000 series BlackBerry, not the 8900 series BlackBerry. I would be happy to provide proof to you on this.

@ Wayne Schulz:
BTW, the gadget news website you refer to (BoyGeniusReport) has a well-known track record of having correct and accurate information. Anyone who viewed the photoshopped "touchscreen" BlackBerry and thought that it was legit needs to have an IQ performed in the near future. I am even surprised that the site actually had to post a story stating that it was a fake. Any person with common sense would have known that was a bogus post.

I think this marks the first signal of a market top for the dominance of the Blackberry.

The era of push email being anything amazing is long gone.

Blackberry is vulnerable in these 5 areas:

1. Lack of html email
2. Requirement of expensive BIS or BES add-on to do anything useful (yes I know people use BB without the plans but to do anything really useful with a BB you need a plan)
3. Insanely bad web browser
4. Push contacts, calendar, email becoming common on other platforms
5. The 3G iPhone will suck all the oxygen out of the developer space - as iPhones grow in popularity third party development for Blackberry will stall

BTW, the reputable gadget news website is the same one which circulated a photoshopped Blackberry image without disclosing it until about 20 sites picked up the image and ran it as fact. Reader beware.

Since when does AT&T care about call quality? Their over use of the AMR-HR codec sounds like crap and is used all over their 2/2.5G network.

Apple might be putting pressure on AT&T to make sure their new 3G iPhone gets all the attention at launch and true to form AT&T is putting them above all else; even if it means putting RIM in 2nd place.

Now would be a perfect time for T-Mobile to step up to the plate and work out a deal for an early release of this new BlackBerry for use with their new upcoming 3G network (if they ever turn on the damn thing).

Apple demanding a 3G launch to themselves seems plausible to me. Also Apple and RIM entering AT&T's HSDPA network at the same time would cause legitimate concerns over network capability. I have no idea if the aforementioned speculation is accurate but it wouldn't surprise me.

this article is completely false. I work for rim. There is no 8900 series. As far as touch screen I can't comment but in the up and comming (soon) 3g hsdpa blackberry 9000 will be released on att on scedual. You need to make corrections or state that this is rummors and unfounded to say the least. Please do more research before stating unfounded false assumptions. Thank you

Scott, there are a few items in your article that are wrong. The new device is not an 8900. It is in fact named the BlackBerry 9000. There is no BlackBerry 8900. A new device later on this year will likely be the BlackBerry 9100 or something else, but there's been no definitive proof as to it being a touchscreen device.

I understand the need to provide some appealing aspects to your articles (I write about BlackBerry for a reputable gadget news website), however simple research will show the flaws in your article.

Although I respect the reporters opinions, I disagree that AT&T would try to delay RIM's new phone, so that people would buy iPhone instead. AT&T is not Apple. AT&T makes money off of both RIM and iPhone. Verizon, because of it's unconventional technology, won't get the RIM until months later. For AT&T, launching a new RIM now means more subscribers over Verizon. When the iPhone comes out later, it will just be icing on the cake. Doesn't makes sense to me.
