As AT&T is talking @ "Open", does it mean that if I buy Iphone separately and still I can use National voice plan on At&T without buying data plan?

The SIM based network by AT&T is already an open standard more or less. You can use unlocked phones not sanctioned by AT&T already while plugging into their network via the SIM card. I've called up AT&T about this and it seemed they knew this was a common thing now and weren't suprised or turned me away. It's just the common public doesn't fully know about this yet. You definitely can't do this on Verizon now.

the technology of the network will decide which devices you can use. until they make a cheap phone that can work on the different platforms, then and only then will the networks be truely open. in short standardized wireless platforms.

AT&T has always had an open network to some extent. My neice bought a european phone on E-bay and stuck her AT&T sim card in it and it worked fine. In the old days I used to pick up analog phones at garage sales and activate them for friends...

If for one minute you believe AT&T and Verizon are sincere about this, then you are completely wrong. Its just that they will change the game to devices based on specifications they will control. So it will still not be open. But they will market the hell out of the "open" network they have. I'm sorry I just pity them.
