As operating systems become ubiquitous, Microsoft will slowly lose their Monopoly on Installed OS, simply because Web Applications will become the norm. I use Mac, Linux, and Vista, however the applications I use on them have no regard as to the OS. Actually. OSX runs most efficiently while Vista is such a paranoid bloated OS. If Google presses forward with Web Based applications and OS, then indeed, MicroSoft will become obsolete in the next decade.

Google and Microsoft still are not equal in terms of monopoly power.

Windows runs on 95% of the world's desktops. They boast an install base of a billion computers.

What does Google have? A free service? Where's the lock-in? Yes, there are network effects from having a big ad network, but it's not the same as Microsoft's lock-in.

That is my $0.02 why the EU treats Google differently than Microsoft.

It seems like Google can do no wrong. I find it odd that the EU gives Google its "blessing" to purchase DoubleClick, and it gives so much hell to Microsoft? Microsoft and Yahoo! should merge and give Google a run for its money.
