People are going to store very personal information on these sites and some random hacker is going to use the data against the users. This "open system" is all part of a scheme for tech companies to use this data to hack into the human mind. Someone right now is working on an algorithm to process the vast amounts of data that are being stored on computer servers across the world. Whoever comes up with the perfect algorithm will become the world's first trillionaire.

Greg -

I kind of agree with you in that the BOX method may not be the final solution, but its certainly a start. As to access, I agree we'll probably see some sort of ACL system spring up that controls both file read/write access AND determines what protocols can be used to access the data. Interesting times!

No doubt technology is booming......the title very rightly mentions "the death of the desktop", yes now a day people prefer the latest technology to ease their lives. Desktop left, laptop came in, now is the turn of mobiles....well all the networking sites are trying to provide their services on mobile as well, In fact this service called MoDazzle provides you access to your favorite social networking site on your mobile through SMS and Email, without internet, GPRS or EDGE. With just your normal phone you can poke a friend, check friends online, read messages, etc….on your finger tips.

I agree with the starting sentiment of this article...users want to be able to access the various aspects of the web wherever they are..however, I disagree that uploading info to an open hub and linking it with web services is an answer that people will like. It's not secure, and because it's completely open to any other web entity, it's not secure.
I think that people will develop trust relationships with the most proactive and responsive providers, and those providers will provide users with the ability to expose or protect as much or as little information as they wish, on as granular a level as is practiable.
The default behaviour will be "expose nothing", which is the opposite of the strategy implicit with the BOX company mentioned in the article.
