Excellent post, one of the most even-handed I have seen on the Android announcement. Rubin says that completely ad-driven cellphones are a long way off, and I think it is because the ad revenue math doesn't add up to enough to pay for a handset yet. More on my blog at http://ikeelliott.typepad.com/telecosm/2007/11/free-ad-support.html

Wow, an article which actually looks with some skepticism at Google's latest plans. I am astounded, especially after all of the incredible puff pieces I have seen in the past two days about Google's plan to put ads on my cell phone.

Carriers have choked innovation in Wireless. You can find a great analysis on the theme at http://www.newamerica.net/publications/policy/wireless_net_neutrality by Tim Wu, a professor at Columbia's law school.

I don't how this new mobile O/S from Google would be but definitely it would impact Symbian's Platinum Partner program. Only Symbian Platinum Partner members can only develop hardcore mobile applications on S60 mobile phones and it is way too costly thing for small companies.

Fixed. I was basing this on revenue, which Verizon has a lead over AT & T.

Since when is Verizon the U.S.'s No. 1 carrier? I assume the measurement being used is the number of customers currently subscribing to each companies network... Last I checked T still held a healthy lead (and has for some time).
